climate change, my apartment
i've recently invested in a window-mounted air conditioner. by recently i mean the day after i returned from england. one night of thinking i could make it through the summer with a fan alone was enough to change my mind primarily because i had all 8 hours of not sleep to ponder my stupidity.
now i'm faced with a world of climate in my own home and the dilemma of how to homogeneitize (may have made that word up) the rooms.
the arctic: the a/c unit is located in my front window. it blows directly into my livingroom at a deafening 54db akin to a blizzard on the arctic tundra, not that i've witnessed this but i have an active imagination. it makes this room pretty unlivable and tv watching near impossible.
the desert: my dining nook faces west...enough said. there aren't enough venetian blinds in the world to keep the heat out of there. it is also connected to the kitchen. more heat. my plants dry out in a matter of seconds.
the midwest: the hallway between the kitchen/bathroom/bedroom, pretty comfortable weatherwise, you may not be able to picture it specifically and not much goes on here.
the rainforest: the distance from the livingroom, the frequent addition of humidity from showers and the filtered sunshine through the frosted (west-facing) window make the bathroom the tropical region of the world. thankfully little time needs to be spent here. not unlike the rainforest, a nice place to visit but living there would be murder for my hair.
the temperate zone: it would seem that the actual cooling capacity of my air conditioner falls just short of my bedroom door. when i step out of my bedroom there is a well defined line between the midwest and its more temperate zone. there is usually a nice breeze from the oscillating fan and although it is warmer than some parts of the apartment it allows me to feel that it actually is summer out there. the lack of over a/c'ing means that there is no need to wear flannel armour to bed when it is 30 degrees outside. i've always felt that our temperate climate allows the best of both worlds: comfortable sleeps without the loss of seasons.
travelling the world in my apartment makes dressing for the weather challenging.
