it's not raining it's pouring

i'd like to start by thanking starbucks for their overpriced coffee, air conditioning and free wireless internet. i don't know where i'd be without it.

so it never rains but it pours. my last two interviews are complete and i think i've learned a valuable lesson...complex continuing care is NOT for me. oh my that point has never been clearer than at the interview yesterday. not only did i get attitude from one of the interviewers about having accepted an acute care job but she also got snippy when i said i couldn't commit to working for them at the end of sept. geez...the term 'high and dry' was bandied about. i tried to take the high ground (which is incidentally dry) and said 'i understand if this means that you must give the position to another candidate' and then i thought 'however, the job has been posted for four months and you are just getting around to interviewing me now'...as the interview progressed i realized my heart just wasn't in it. it felt more like an inquisition rather than a sharing of information. behavioural interviews are a whole new world of pain especially with questions like 'how do you assess if a patient with a dense neurological injury is ready to acquire new information and learn from you, cite a specific example from your experience'...'uhhhhhhhhhhh'. i much prefer hypothetical questions and answers.

lesson learned: never write 'my primary interest is in complex continuing care' in your cover letter unless you are prepared to back it up.

that interview was sharply contrasted with my experience this morning at yet another acute care hospital where i had a great time being interviewed. there was a great positive attitude amongst the staff and they said 'well we've been known to wait several months to ensure we get an appropriate candidate'...now that is more like it! the only problem is that the hospital is three trains and a bus away from my house (about an hour fifteen door to door). i must say that the scarb. hospital certainly does have nice facilities though!

today also saw another job offer come my way. i was offered a permanent position at KGH...that's right, good old ktown. sadly i don't think i'll be pursuing it any further, however they were kind enough to keep the offer open if, in september, i find myself without work!

what i don't understand is why all the hospitals have suddenly become interested in hiring...why couldn't they get their acts together back in may...it would have made me feel a lot better. i am however glad that i waited (in destitute poverty) until i got something in toronto...i may now have to retract my previous comment of "snobby, big-city hospitals not hiring non-uoft grads". i hate (and love) being wrong.
